A Colorful Group with Heart – A Special Class Trip to Khon Kaen

For many years, RIS Swiss Section – Deutschsprachige Schule Bangkok has maintained a close partnership with the Sri Sangwan School in Khon Kaen, a school for children with physical and intellectual disabilities. This year’s class trip once again focused on togetherness, mutual learning, and heartfelt support.

Monday – Arrival in the Northeast

Our journey began on Monday morning with a flight to Khon Kaen. Excitement was high not just because of the trip itself, but especially due to the upcoming encounter with the students of the Sri Sangwan School. After checking in at the hotel, our students had the chance to explore the nearby Central Plaza Mall, share a meal, and prepare for the meaningful days ahead.

Tuesday – Creativity, Connection, and Cultural Exchange

A truly special day began with a creative workshop prepared by our partner school. Our students worked side by side with the children of the Sri Sangwan School. Whether crafting, drawing, or creating leaf prints on fabric, collaboration happened with respect, joy, and mutual support.
It was touching to see the care our students showed passing materials, pushing wheelchairs, and always offering a listening ear.

Later, we visited the Treasury Museum Khon Kaen, which offers a fascinating look into the history of money in Thailand. Together, the two student groups coming from very different backgrounds explored currency from ancient shell and metal forms to modern banknotes featuring royal symbols and national values.

What made the experience particularly meaningful was the inclusive approach: the museum tour was adapted so that all children could participate. Our students helped their partners access and feel exhibits, making learning tangible, inclusive, and alive.

Wednesday – Learning From Each Other

This day, our students became teachers. In small groups, they led English-language lessons at the Sri Sangwan School on topics like colors, seasons, favorite foods, and basic math—all taught playfully and with creativity.

Their empathy, patience, and imagination were impressive.
Some students truly discovered their strengths, and for a few, this may have even sparked interest in a future career in education or social work.
In the afternoon, both schools prepared a shared stage performance for the upcoming celebration. There was dancing, rehearsing, laughing, and moments of pure connection real team effort.

Thursday – Giving Back and Celebrating

The morning brought energetic eSports competitions, with both schools cheering, competing, and celebrating fair play.

Meanwhile, part of the group went out to purchase urgently needed donations: 🧼 cleaning supplies, 🍽️ utensils, 🪥 toothbrushes, 🧷 diapers, 💊 medication—and of course, 🍬 treats and snacks for the big farewell party.

In the afternoon, we came together for a joyful closing celebration with dance performances, music, and heartfelt conversations. Friendships were formed, contact details exchanged—and the smiles said more than words ever could.

Friday – Heading Home with Full Hearts

After one last breakfast together, it was time to say goodbye. Our flight back to Bangkok left at midday, and we returned with full hearts and countless memories, knowing this was far more than just a school trip.

Conclusion – More Than a Journey

As teachers, we are incredibly proud of our students.
They were attentive, helpful, compassionate, and respectful.

They didn’t just assist they connected, took responsibility, and crossed boundaries: socially, linguistically, and culturally.

This colorful group didn’t just think they felt.

And that’s exactly why this week in Khon Kaen will remain in our hearts as a week with heart
